The out-and-back, 2018 in review, and out again, 2019

On January 28, 2019 By Kurstin GrahamIn Annual Review2 Comments

In a sea of sagebrush on the Toiyabe Crest Trail I started looking back on 2018 by re-reading my review of 2017. Then I went through my posts of 2018. Then I went through my Garmin Connect Activities for 2018 all taking me down memory lane. I also scanned the statistics to see what were …

Winter Tour III; Luning to Sand Mountain

On May 26, 2018 By Kurstin GrahamIn Short Tours2 Comments

Who better to take advice from than @koldcoyote on Instagram.  koldcoyote, You ever pack out of Luning via jackrabbit road? Connects to Fallon. Really cool area. I took this suggestion and ran with it. I found the road on Google Maps, planned a route through Rawhide, with an excursion to Rawhide Hot Springs, and on to …

Ride Report; Hazen, NV and Hot Springs Mountains

On March 13, 2018 By Kurstin GrahamIn Ride Report3 Comments

How many times have I driven past the iconic Hazen Market? Whatever the number, it is only a fraction of the number of photos of this Alt-Highway 50 (Old Lincoln Highway, Reno Highway) landmark I have seen. It is interesting to railroad buffs (founded in 1903 as a Union Pacific station), history buffs (Nevada's last …

Ride Report; Carson Sink’s Dunes

On February 14, 2018 By Kurstin GrahamIn Gear, Ride ReportLeave a comment

"If you make it I will ride down and you can take my picture. For perspective," Pete let me know. If I survived? What were the range of outcomes riding down the face of the dune? Ripping success, a slow stilted descent, tumbling down the sand face, and somewhere in the mix was not surviving. …

A Day in the Desert with Chris Carnel

On December 2, 2017 By Kurstin GrahamIn Day Trips, Uncategorized1 Comment

I met Chris on a mountain bike street/stunt road trip with Jim Severt. We road urban terrain in Sacramento, CA before traveling into the California Central Valley to find and ride a full pipe Jim knew about. It feels like that was a lifetime ago. Since then I have known Chris on the fringe between …

This photo, by @shaydaylami, tells the story of unexpectedly waking up to wet snow when sleeping under a tarp on a bikepacking overnight. For the whole story check out the link in my bio. Overnight; The First Rides with Friends 2022, The Lava Beds Huge thanks to everyone on the trip and to Friends of Black Rock High Rock @blackrockdesert
Great road ride out of Genoa today. Nick @manzanitacycles only makes beautiful bikes! Dave @nukesunrisebikebags makes fantastic functional custom bags. A perfect match. #steelisrealgravel #bikepackingbags #custommade #nevadagold
Day two of The Lava Beds Loop, Rides w Friends of Black Rock High Rock. A thunderstorm cell dropped snow on us for hours while we slept. We descended 1,200 feet out of The Lava Beds in 7 miles with views to be seen nowhere else. We regrouped on Jungo Rd to celebrate like a day at the beach. Dinner and Picons at Bruno's was the perfect end to the weekend. See you all at Black Rock Rendezvous for more Rides with Friends of Black Rock High Rock #blackrockdesert #publicland #bikepackingnv #explorenevada #burritopackingnv
Just getting home from the first of a series of rides with Friends of Black Rock High Rock. These rides are intended to give participants a greater connection to their public lands, inspire future visits and potential for stewardship to protect the areas we ride. This is day one of the trip through Kumiva Valley into Granite Springs Valley before climbing The Lava Beds to Sheep Head Spring to camp. #blackrockdesert #bikepackingnv #burritopackingnv #falconercycles #nukesunrise
I woke to a starry cold night above Verdi-Mogul-Reno. @dragonturbo3 was up early to get to work. I watched a #nukesunrise then rode out with @manzanitacycles and Carrie. I made a quick stop at @hubcoffeeroasters because you should spend it where you send it. We had a great #microadventure so there will be sure to be more. Now, get to work!
